Ai no Ryū (藍の龍): the indigo dragon
Indigo (ai) is one of the most deeply rooted colours in Japanese craft. Used to dye kimonos, workwear and martial arts garments, it was so prevalent that foreign visitors came to call it the “blue of Japan.” Paired with the dragon, a creature of the waters, it conjures the depths of the sea and the open sky.
This tanto brings the two together: a saya lacquered in indigo and white with a crackle finish, and a mounting in which the dragon appears on the guard, the kashira and the habaki.
A mirror-polished T10 steel blade with bo-hi
The blade is forged in T10 steel, a high-carbon steel prized for its hardness and edge retention. It follows a shinogi-zukuri geometry with a chū-kissaki point.
The surface is mirror-polished and cut with a single bo-hi that terminates in a rounded finish (maru-dome) before the yokote. There is no hamon, giving the surface a clean, luminous quality throughout.
A black mounting with a coiled dragon
The kawari-gata tsuba in blackened alloy is shaped as a coiled dragon, forming an openwork ring (ji-sukashi). Its scales and mane are rendered in raised relief (takabori), and its cut edge traces the creature’s dorsal ridge. A gilded brass seppa accompanies it.
The blackened alloy fuchi carries a frieze of flames in relief against a granulated ground (nanako), while the kashira features a stylised dragon in relief. The handle combines wood with faux white ray skin beneath a hineri-maki grey tsuka-ito, fitted with menuki in the form of black dragons. The ichimai habaki in gilded brass is finely engraved with a dragon (kebori).
An indigo crackle-lacquered saya
The saya is crafted from solid wood and coated in a kawari-nuri lacquer in indigo and white with a high-gloss finish. Its crackle effect evokes a field of flowers in bloom. The koiguchi and rounded kojiri (maru-kojiri) are lacquered in gloss black. The black-lacquered kurikata with gilded shitodome holds a grey cotton sageo.
Dimensions and handling
With a blade of 33 cm and an overall length of 55 cm, Ai no Ryū is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm handle sits firmly in one hand, while the total weight of 0.7 kg keeps it light and responsive. At 57 cm in its saya, the piece presents beautifully, the dragon-form tsuba commanding attention on any display stand.
