Kodachi Sword: design and finishes
This Kodachi, elegantly evoking the essence of the Heian era, is distinguished by distinctive characteristics that recall its seminal role in the history of Japanese swords as the ancestor of the Wakizashi. Its finely-sharpened Damascus steel blade extends majestically over 52 cm.
The untouched rosewood scabbard frames the blade with striking sobriety, true to the authentic craftsmanship of the Heian era. The small, ornamental rounded guard and every detail, from the 20 cm rosewood Tsuka to the meticulous engraving on the blade, is carefully reproduced to capture the historical essence of this small Japanese sword.
The color of the blade highlights the nuances of the damascus steel, while the guard, with its elegant shape, recalls the artistic details of the period. The finely crafted brass of the Habaki accentuates the harmonious transition between blade and guard.
The balanced weight of around 1 kg offers an immersive experience, transporting the holder back to a time when the Kodachi embodied the quintessence of martial refinement. Every element of this carefully crafted Kodachi celebrates its origin and perpetuates the fascinating heritage of Japanese swords.
Origins of Kodachi
The kodachi is considered as the ancestor of the wakizashi in Japan. While the wakizashi appeared during the Muromachi era (1336 to 1573), the kodachi is said to have origins dating back to the Heian period (794 to 1185). Its shape is based on that of the tachi, and it is often thinner and more curved than the wakizashi. A kodachi generally measures between 40 and 65 cm.
