What is a Chokutō sword?
The Chokutō, or “straight sword”, is an ancestral Japanese weapon used before the 10th century. Its straight blades were worn on the belt and used for stabbing or cutting. Before the advent of differential tempering, which gave katanas their curvature, Chokutō were straight and resembled Chinese swords. Their popularity declined with the emergence of the katana sword. Despite their rarity today, their style still reflects Chinese and Korean influences.
