Kurenai no Mon (紅の紋): the Crimson Crest
Kurenai is the deep scarlet red associated in Japan with vitality, protection and celebration. The mon (or kamon) is the hereditary crest of Japanese noble families, worn on the garments, armour and weapons of the samurai.
This tanto unites both on its saya: a vivid red lacquer from which gilded kamon emerge like a clan banner. The black-and-gold mount, with its floral motifs, extends this heraldic refinement across every detail of the piece.
A T10 steel blade with a genuine gunome midare hamon
The blade is forged in T10 steel, a high-carbon steel prized for its hardness and edge retention. It has been clay-tempered, a process that draws a genuine hamon to the surface of the steel.
The temper line traces a gunome midare pattern, an undulating succession of irregular waves that catches the light with every shift in angle. The blade follows a shinogi-zukuri geometry with a chū-kissaki point, and is carved with a bo-hi fuller to reduce weight.
A black mount with gilded blossoms
The round tsuba is crafted in black alloy and ornamented with gilded floral motifs. The fuchi and kashira echo this decoration precisely, creating a perfectly unified mount throughout.
The tsuka pairs a wooden core with faux white ray skin, wrapped in a diamond-pattern black tsuka-ito, beneath which gilded dragon menuki emerge at each lozenge. The habaki in gilded brass is engraved with foliage, a quiet echo of the blossoms on the guard.
A red lacquered saya with gilded kamon
The saya is crafted in hardwood and finished with a glittering red lacquer, set off by gilded kamon. The depth of the red and the brilliance of the gold give this scabbard a commanding presence. A restrained black sageo completes the ensemble.
Dimensions and handling of the tanto
With a blade of 33 cm and an overall length of 55 cm, Kurenai no Mon is a tanto of generous proportions. The 17 cm tsuka sits firmly in a single hand. At 0.7 kg, the piece remains light and responsive. Sheathed, it measures 57 cm, a format that allows its brilliant red lacquer to make a striking statement on any display mount.
