Ōgon Kiku (黄金菊): the golden chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum, kiku, is Japan’s most emblematic flower: it graces the imperial seal and embodies longevity and nobility. Rendered in gold (ōgon), it becomes an image of prestige and radiance.
This tanto places it at the very heart of its mounting: a gilded kiku-gata guard shaped as a chrysanthemum, and blossoms chiselled in relief on the fuchi and kashira. The golden-brown saya extends this warm, luminous harmony throughout.
A T10 steel blade with a genuine gunome midare hamon
The blade is crafted from T10 steel, a high-carbon steel prized for its hardness. Clay tempering has drawn out a genuine gunome midare hamon, crisp and well-contrasted against a dark grey polished steel surface.
The blade features a small ko-kissaki point, with no hi.
A gilded mounting in chrysanthemum form
The tsuba is a small kiku-gata guard in gilded alloy, shaped as a chrysanthemum. Its polished ground (migaki) carries a floral motif in relief (takabori), and its rim is sculpted in segments evoking bamboo. It has no openwork. Two gilded brass seppa with a fluted edge frame it on either side.
The fuchi and kashira in gilded alloy are chiselled with blossoms in relief, matching the guard. The handle combines wood with faux black rayskin, beneath a beige tsuka-ito wrapped in hineri-maki, with gilded menuki. The ichimai habaki in gilded brass is engraved with crosshatching and striations.
A speckled golden-brown lacquered saya
The saya is solid wood, covered in a bright kawari-nuri speckled golden-brown lacquer that echoes the gold of the mounting. The rounded (maru) koiguchi and kojiri are lacquered in plain black. The black-lacquered kurikata with gilded shitodome accepts a beige cotton sageo.
Dimensions and handling of the tanto
With a blade of 33 cm and an overall length of 55 cm, Ōgon Kiku is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm handle sits firmly in one hand. At 0.7 kg, it remains light in the hand. At 57 cm in its saya, a format that showcases its gilded guard to full effect on a display stand.
