Aohazumi Katana Sword: design and finishes

The Aohazumi katana sword (青刃墨), whose name literally means “blue blade” in Japanese, draws its essence from the tradition of swords with mysterious hues that fascinated master swordsmiths during the Edo period.

Its manganese steel blade reveals a blue hue with purple highlights that captures the light in a hypnotic way, while the bo-hi carved into the steel lightens the whole piece and produces a characteristic whistling sound when moved. The round copper tsuba features a finely chiseled golden dragon, a symbol of power and wisdom in Japanese culture. The handle harmoniously combines faux black stingray skin and wood, covered with black diamond-patterned braiding that ensures a firm and elegant grip. The menuki represent golden dragons that fit perfectly with the overall theme, while the fuchi and kashira in golden copper complete this refined aesthetic. The black lacquered wooden scabbard is adorned with a bright red dragon that contrasts beautifully with the sobriety of the background, connected by a black and white sageo with balanced shades.
