Military Katana Sword: design and finishes
This military katana sword features a mount typical of Japanese army regulation swords. Unlike traditional katanas, where a woven silk sageo cord secures the sword to the obi sash, this military version is equipped with two metal belt loops. These fasteners allowed officers to hang their swords directly from their military belts, offering greater practicality on the battlefield while retaining the elegance of the Japanese sword.
Its manganese steel blade has a polished surface that reveals the subtle nuances of the metal, while the bo-hi lightens the structure and produces a characteristic whistling sound when moved. The rounded cross-shaped tsuba, forged from a silver alloy, features finely engraved floral motifs that contrast with the kozuka-hitsu, showcasing the craftsmanship involved. The handle combines the authentic texture of black stingray skin with fine wood, wrapped in a green tsuka-ito braided in a diamond pattern that ensures a firm grip. The menuki represent a golden dragon, a symbol of power and protection, while the fuchi and kashira harmoniously echo the floral motifs of the guard. The rosewood scabbard, embellished with silver ornaments, ends with a kojiri and koiguchi decorated with engraved flowers, creating a coherent ensemble of striking beauty.
The black brass habaki, decorated with a lotus flower, symbolizes the spiritual purity of the warrior, adding a philosophical dimension to this combat instrument.
