Phoenix Katana Sword: design and finishes

The Hōyoku (鳳翼) or Phoenix Wing katana sword combines the bright, gilded color of brass with the red elegantly reminiscent of the flames’ color, giving it the name of Phoenix Wing. Its two-tone red Damascus steel blade bears witness to a unique swordsmith and features a tōran hamon obtained by real clay tempering. The blade is stored in a red-tinged scabbard fastened with a burgundy and white sageo. The handle is made of white synthetic shagreen leather, wrapped in a red tsuka-ito in a diamond pattern, and embellished with a long gilded dragon menuki, a symbol of power and wisdom. The wave-engraved gilded brass guard and matching fuchi evoke the ocean, while the hammered brass habaki adds a refined finishing touch. This katana embodies rebirth and passion with its bright colors and traditional motifs.
