Kaija Katana Sword: design and finishes
The name Kaija (海蛇), which literally means “sea snake” in Japanese, evokes the mystical power of legendary sea creatures. This name reflects the deep connection between the element of water and the spiritual power of the sword, symbolizing fluidity of movement and the ancient wisdom of the ocean depths. In Japanese tradition, the sea serpent represents a guardian of hidden treasures and a guide to spiritual transformation.
Its manganese steel blade has a natural steel color that subtly captures the light, while the black habaki engraved with snake scales creates a harmonious transition to the guard. The round copper alloy tsuba stands out for its artistic representation of a coiled sea serpent, showcasing remarkable chiseling work. The handle elegantly combines faux white stingray skin and wood, enhanced by blue tsuka-ito braiding in a diamond pattern that evokes ocean waves. The menuki depict a black dragon, creating a visual dialogue with the serpentine theme, while the smooth black alloy fuchi and kashira provide a refined finish. The lacquered wooden scabbard features sky blue and gold grain painting that captures the essence of the ocean depths, complemented by a blue sageo with an orange attachment reminiscent of the colors of the sunset over the ocean.
