Kurokin Katana Sword: Design and finishes
The name Kurokin (黒金) evokes the perfect union between deep black (黒 – kuro) and brilliant gold (金 – kin), symbolising the fundamental duality of existence: shadow and light. This chromatic harmony reflects the Japanese philosophy in which each element finds its value in its opposite.
The 1060 steel blade has a deep black colour that contrasts beautifully with the genuine hamon notare obtained by differential tempering. The bo-hi elegantly hollows out the surface of the blade, combining functionality and aesthetics. The rounded tsuba in black and gold alloy features delicate floral motifs accompanied by a majestic lion, symbolising courage and nobility. The handle (tsuka) harmoniously combines black faux stingray skin with gold leather braiding forming regular diamond shapes, while the silver menuki add an extra touch of refinement. The fuchi and kashira echo the floral motifs of the guard in the same black and gold finish, creating perfect visual consistency. The black and gold lacquered scabbard matches the ensemble perfectly, complemented by a gold sageo that emphasises the elegance of this piece.
