Hotaru (蛍): the firefly
In Japan, the firefly (hotaru) heralds the arrival of summer. Its gentle light above the rivers has been celebrated for centuries in poetry, and it is sometimes said to carry the souls of the departed. It is a symbol of ephemeral, wordless beauty.
This wakizashi captures that image on its saya: a black lacquer in which green and blue glitter dance like fireflies kindling in the dark. The silver floral fittings and blue tsuka-ito sustain the atmosphere of a summer night.
A straight damascus steel blade with tsuchime hammer finish
The blade is crafted from damascus steel, formed by layering and folding multiple layers of steel to produce distinctive surface patterns. Its profile is straight : clean, spare and precise.
It is distinguished by a tsuchime hammer finish: a textured surface of small, faceted impressions that play with the light. The blade carries neither hamon nor bo-hi.
Silver fittings with floral motifs
The tsuba is a small rounded guard in silver-toned alloy, adorned with floral motifs. The fuchi and kashira are rendered in matching silver with the same engraved flower pattern, giving the overall fittings a seamless coherence.
The tsuka combines a wooden core with a faux white ray skin, wrapped in a diamond-pattern blue tsuka-ito, beneath which silver dragon menuki appear. The habaki in brass presents a woven chequerboard effect.
A black saya with green and blue shimmer
The saya is crafted from hardwood and coated in a black lacquer threaded with green and blue glitter. Depending on the angle, the particles catch the light like fireflies igniting in darkness. A blue and white sageo, matched to the tsuka-ito, completes the piece.
Dimensions and handling
With a blade of 51 cm and an overall length of 78 cm, Hotaru carries the proportions of a wakizashi, the shorter companion to the katana. Its 23 cm tsuka offers a comfortable one-handed grip, with room for the second hand in support. At 1 kg, it remains easy to manoeuvre. It measures 80 cm in its saya, a format that lends itself equally to solo display or alongside a katana.
