Inome (猪目): the pierced hearts
The inome, literally “the eye of the boar”, is a heart-shaped Japanese motif found for centuries on temples, shrines and weapons. Believed to ward off fire and evil, it endures today as a symbol of good fortune.
On this wakizashi, it becomes the defining motif of the tsuba, pierced with inome ajours and small circular openings. The rest of the fittings (black and restrained) draw every eye towards these forms.
A mirror-polished 1045 steel blade with bo-hi
The blade is crafted from 1045 steel, a robust, widely used carbon steel that is straightforward to maintain. It follows a shinogi-zukuri geometry with a chū-kissaki tip, and is cut with a polished bo-hi.
It is mirror-polished, with a darkened body set against a strikingly bright, milky-white line. This notare-style line is a decorative hamon.
Black fittings with inome piercings
The mokkō-gata tsuba in blackened iron presents a satin-polished surface (migaki), inome ajours and small circular piercings, two hitsu-ana openings and a rounded rim (maru-mimi). A gilded brass seppa accompanies it.
The fuchi and kashira in polished blackened alloy are smooth and unadorned. The handle combines wood with black faux ray skin beneath a black tsuka-ito binding in hineri-maki, with black menuki. The ichimai habaki in gilded copper, finely grooved, bears a raised chrysanthemum medallion (kiku mon).
A scabbard in faux ray skin
The saya is solid wood, covered in fine-grain faux ray skin that offers a distinctly textured feel. The koiguchi and kojiri follow seamlessly from the scabbard. There is no kurikata: a black-and-gold maru-sageo is tied directly around the saya.
Dimensions and handling of the wakizashi
With a blade of 51 cm and an overall length of 78 cm, Inome carries the proportions of a wakizashi, the shorter companion to the katana. Its 23 cm handle offers a comfortable single-handed grip, with room for the second hand to brace. At 1 kg, it remains thoroughly manageable. Sheathed, it measures 80 cm, an ideal format for displaying alone or alongside a katana.
