Kagome (籠目): the golden basketwork
The kagome is the woven pattern of traditional Japanese bamboo baskets. Its interlaced lattice has long been regarded as a charm of good fortune and a symbol of protection, evil spirits, it is said, are warded off by its many watchful “eyes”. The motif even lent its name to one of Japan’s best-known children’s folk songs.
This wakizashi carries the pattern across its entire fittings: a gold-tone guard engraved with the basketwork design, a fuchi and kashira rendered in the same braided effect, and a saya sheathed in braided leather.
A 1045 carbon steel blade with mirror-polished bo-hi
The blade is crafted from 1045 carbon steel, a robust and widely used high-carbon steel that is straightforward to maintain. It follows a shinogi-zukuri geometry with a chū-kissaki point, and features a longitudinal bo-hi that terminates before the habaki.
The satin-grey body of the blade contrasts with the mirror-polished bo-hi. No hamon is present.
Gold-tone basketwork fittings
The kakumaru-gata tsuba (square in form with softly rounded corners) is cast in patinated gold-tone alloy. Its ground is engraved in a woven basketwork pattern using kebori line work, embellished with bamboo in takabori relief, and features two hitsu-ana apertures and a maru-mimi rounded rim. A gilt brass seppa accompanies it.
The fuchi, in matching patinated gold-tone alloy, repeats the basketwork ground with darkened highlights, while the kashira presents a rounded cap with a braided effect. The handle combines a wooden core and a black faux-ray-skin wrap beneath a black leather kawa-maki braid, with gold-tone menuki. The ichimai habaki in polished copper with a gold-tone finish carries an engraved circular kamon.
A braided-leather-sheathed saya
The saya is crafted from solid wood and dressed in a black braided-leather sheath, with a tan leather X-laced reinforcement. The koiguchi and kojiri, both rounded in form, are likewise wrapped in braided leather. There is no kurikata; a brown leather strap is laced directly onto the reinforcement.
Dimensions and handling
With a blade of 51 cm and an overall length of 78 cm, the Kagome carries the proportions of a wakizashi, the shorter companion to the katana. Its 23 cm leather-braided handle offers a firm single-handed grip. At 1 kg, it remains entirely manoeuvrable. Measuring 80 cm in its saya, it is equally suited to display alone or alongside a katana.
