Kōryū Wakizashi: design and finishes
The name Kōryū (光龍) combines two kanji characters with remarkable symbolic power: “光” (kō) means light or brilliance, while “龍” (ryū) represents the dragon. In Japanese tradition, the luminous dragon symbolizes spiritual transformation and the ability to transcend obstacles through inner strength and clarity of mind.
The T10 steel blade reveals an authentic gunome hamon, the result of differential tempering that creates irregular waves along the cutting edge. The bo-hi carved into the steel lightens the blade while producing a characteristic whistling sound when moved. The round tsuba features a striking contrast between black and white, enhanced by delicate gilding that evokes the balance of opposing forces. The handle, covered in white samegawa and braided with immaculate tsuka-ito in a diamond pattern, features menuki representing golden dragons. The white alloy fuchi and kashira adorned with golden flowers complete this chromatic harmony, while the gray lacquered scabbard is decorated with a blue and yellow dragon that seems to come to life on its polished surface.
