Mitsudomoe (三つ巴): the triple tomoe
The mitsudomoe is a motif of three comma forms (tomoe) revolving within a circle. Associated with Hachiman, the god of war and guardian of the samurai, it appears on shrine drums and the crests of countless clans. It embodies perpetual motion and the balance of opposing forces.
On this wakizashi, the motif becomes the very soul of the tsuba, pierced in its image. The rest of the fittings (black, restrained) exist only to let it speak.
A T10 steel blade with a blue-tinted bo-hi
The blade is crafted from T10 steel, a high-carbon steel prized for its hardness. Its geometry follows shinogi-zukuri proportions, with a chū-kissaki point and a torii-zori curvature. A bo-hi runs the full length of the blade, terminating in a rounded maru-dome finish.
A decorative blue colouring borders the bo-hi with an undulating boundary, the edge polished to a satin finish. This line is a decorative hamon.
Black fittings centred on the mitsudomoe
The round (maru-gata) tsuba in blackened iron is pierced with a three-lobe mitsudomoe (tomoe-sukashi), with a polished black surface (migaki) and a rounded rim (maru-mimi). A gilded brass seppa accompanies it.
The fuchi and kashira in smooth blackened alloy are deliberately understated. The handle combines wood with a faux black ray-skin under a beige tsuka-ito wrap in hineri-maki, with black menuki. The ichimai habaki in gilded copper is engraved with a floral mon.
A mirror-black saya
The saya is of solid wood, finished in mirror-black roiro-nuri lacquer, with no further ornament. The koiguchi and kojiri are black. The black-lacquered kurikata with a gilded brass shitodome holds a midnight-blue cotton sageo.
Dimensions and handling of the wakizashi
With a blade of 51 cm and an overall length of 78 cm, the Mitsudomoe carries the proportions of a wakizashi, the shorter companion to the katana. Its 23 cm handle offers a comfortable single-handed grip, with room for the second hand in support. At 1 kg, it remains highly manageable. At 80 cm in its saya, it is equally suited to solo display or to being presented alongside a katana.
