Discover the Muku (無垢) Pure Wood tanto, a piece of striking restraint in which the materials speak for themselves. Solid wood saya and handle, no tsuba, no wrapping: all attention falls on the T10 steel blade, clay-tempered to reveal a true gunome midare hamon. A single openwork gilded brass habaki brings a quiet gleam to this pared-back ensemble.

Muku (無垢): the beauty of raw material

The Japanese word muku denotes what is pure, free from mixture or artifice. It also describes solid wood, left exactly as it is. This tanto takes that idea at its word: no ornament, no lacquer, no guard. Only wood and steel.

This unadorned aesthetic reflects the Japanese sensibility for simplicity, where the quality of an object is read in its proportions and the honesty of its materials rather than in decoration.

A T10 steel blade with a true gunome midare hamon

The blade is crafted from T10 steel, a high-carbon steel prized for its hardness. It has been clay-tempered: clay applied to the spine slows the cooling process, creating two distinct zones of hardness and giving rise to a true hamon.

The temper line traces a gunome midare pattern, a sequence of irregular waves that catches the light. The blade also features a bo-hi, a longitudinal groove that reduces weight and accentuates its line.

A mounting reduced to its essentials

With its aiguchi mounting, this tanto does away with a tsuba: handle and saya meet directly, creating a continuous, compact silhouette. The solid wood handle carries no wrapping, offering immediate contact with the bare wood. A fuchi in the form of a black collar marks the transition between handle and blade.

The sole decorative accent is the openwork gilded brass habaki, which reveals an underlying black alloy hand-hammered with small raised dots (nanako). The contrast between gold and black reads all the more clearly against so restrained a setting.

A solid wood saya

The saya is carved from solid wood, unvarnished and unadorned, in direct continuity with the handle. The koiguchi, the mouth of the scabbard, is edged in black, echoing the collar on the handle. The overall impression evokes traditional shirasaya-style mountings, conceived first and foremost to protect the blade.

Dimensions and handling

With a 33 cm blade and an overall length of 55 cm, Muku is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm handle is designed for a single-hand grip, and the absence of wrapping gives a smooth, natural feel in the hand. At 0.7 kg, it remains light. Sheathed, it measures 57 cm, a discreet format that stores and displays with equal ease.
