Ryūhi (龍皮): the dragon’s skin
In Japanese legend, the dragon’s hide is armoured with impenetrable scales, harder than the finest steel, an emblem of protection and invulnerability.
This tanto takes that idea as its very essence: the saya is clad from tip to mouth in raised dragon motifs, as though the blade rests within the creature’s own skin. The black-and-gold fittings and the leather braid carry that textured character throughout the piece.
A mirror-polished 1045 steel blade with bo-hi
The blade is forged in 1045 steel, a reliable high-carbon grade known for its robustness and ease of maintenance. Its geometry follows shinogi-zukuri proportions with a chū-kissaki point, and a bo-hi runs the length of the flat.
The surface is mirror-polished, with dark satin zones describing an undulating pattern against the bright edge. This notare-style line is a decorative hamon produced by chemical treatment, not by differential hardening: it reproduces the appearance of a traditional hamon without its metallurgical properties.
A black-and-gold hamidashi mounting
The tanto is mounted in hamidashi style, with a small round (maru-gata) guard in blackened alloy, without openwork, its granulated (nanako) ground inlaid with a gilded floral frieze (nunome-zōgan). A gilded brass seppa completes the assembly.
The fuchi in blackened alloy carries a raised gilded floral frieze, while the kashira displays gilded scrollwork inlaid on a nanako ground. The grip combines a wooden core with black faux ray skin, bound in a black leather (kawa-maki) braid, with gilded menuki. The habaki (an ichimai in gilded brass) bears an engraved kamon in the form of a fleur-de-lys.
A saya cloaked in raised dragon relief
The saya is crafted in solid wood, its entire length covered in a raised dragon relief. This textured surface offers an assured grip and a distinctive feel, and it is what sets this tanto apart as a singular piece.
Dimensions and handling
With a 33 cm blade and an overall length of 55 cm, Ryūhi is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm leather-braided handle provides a secure single-handed hold. At 0.7 kg, the piece remains notably light. In its saya it measures 57 cm, a format that displays the relief work to full effect on an exhibition stand.
