Ginmidori Katana Sword: design and finishes
The name Ginmidori evokes the perfect harmony between silver (gin 銀) and green (midori 緑), two colors that symbolize prosperity and natural growth in Japanese culture.
Its manganese steel blade features a striking black finish, enhanced by a genuine straight hamon obtained through differential tempering, which draws a clear line between the hardened cutting edge and the more flexible back. The bo-hi carved into the metal lightens the blade while producing the famous “song of the katana” during movements. The rounded cross-shaped tsuba, crafted from a silver alloy, features delicate floral engravings that are harmoniously repeated on the fuchi and kashira, creating a remarkable decorative consistency. The handle reveals meticulous craftsmanship with its black faux stingray skin base covered with green tsuka-ito braided in diamond patterns, while the gilded menuki representing dragons add a touch of nobility. The rosewood scabbard, with its silver-plated ends engraved with floral motifs identical to those on the guard, completes this harmony and features a green ring matching the braiding.
