Kōkiba katana sword: design and finishes
In Japanese, “kō” (銅) refers to copper, a noble metal with warm tones, while “kiba” (刃) represents a sharp blade.
The T10 steel blade of the Kōkiba katana sword features an exceptional coppery hue that captures and reflects light with hypnotic intensity. The genuine hamon, achieved through differential tempering, forms a wavy line that separates areas of different hardness, creating a striking visual contrast on this golden surface. The bo-hi elegantly hollows the back of the blade, lightening its structure while producing that characteristic whistling sound when moved. The golden alloy guard (tsuba) features a dragon, a motif that is harmoniously repeated on the fuchi, while the kashira crowns the handle with a majestic dragon’s head. The handle reveals the authentic texture of white stingray skin (samegawa) beneath brown diamond-shaped braiding, punctuated with golden menuki representing dragons. The scabbard surprises with its transparent finish that reveals the natural beauty of the raw wood, framed by contrasting black ends and a two-tone black and copper sageo.
