Seiryū Katana Sword: design and finishes
The Seiryū takes its name from the Azure Dragon, one of the four mythical creatures guarding the cardinal directions in Sino-Japanese cosmology. This protective deity of the East symbolizes spring, rebirth, and spiritual strength. Thus, this katana embodies the celestial power of the blue dragon, which watches over new beginnings and guides warriors to victory.
Its manganese steel blade has a unique blue tint reminiscent of the scales of the legendary dragon, while the midare notare hamon pattern forms irregular waves reminiscent of the clouds where Seiryū resides. The rounded copper tsuba features a cross motif adorned with a golden dragon, creating a striking contrast with the dark blade. The handle is covered with faux white stingray skin for a firm grip, with blue braiding (tsuka-ito) forming regular diamond shapes. The golden menuki faithfully represent the celestial dragon, while the copper fuchi and kashira reveal delicate floral patterns that complement the refined aesthetic. The black lacquered wooden scabbard is adorned with a majestic golden dragon, accompanied by a two-tone blue and red sageo reminiscent of the colors of the sky at dawn.
