Shinku no Ryū Katana Sword: design and finishes
Shinku no Ryū, literally “Crimson Dragon,” takes its name from the legend of guardian dragons that protected imperial treasures, creatures that were both destructive and benevolent depending on the will of their bearer. The term “shinku” symbolizes not only the crimson color of blood spilled in battle, but also the fiery passion and unwavering honor of the samurai.
Its 1060 steel blade features a deep black finish that contrasts beautifully with the genuine notare hamon, created using traditional differential tempering. The bo-hi delicately hollows the blade, lightening its structure while producing the characteristic whistling sound during movement. The gold alloy tsuba features a rounded cross adorned with a finely engraved dragon, while the fuchi reveals a precisely chiseled sea serpent. The handle combines a wooden base covered with white imitation stingray skin, wrapped in blue and red tsuka-ito forming an elegant diamond pattern. The gold menuki punctuate this harmonious composition, and the black and gold kashira is adorned with delicate floral motifs. The black lacquered wooden scabbard features a gold dragon snaking along its entire length, complemented by a sageo in blue and red colors matching the handle.
This functional blade offers the perfect balance between aesthetics and performance, thanks to its full tang construction and weight of 1.3 kg, which guarantees optimal maneuverability. The finely chiseled golden habaki ensures a precise fit in the sheath, demonstrating traditional craftsmanship. The Shinku no Ryū is the perfect embodiment of Japanese dragon mythology, where every decorative detail tells the story of a legendary guardian. This piece will appeal to collectors passionate about Japanese culture as well as martial artists looking for an authentic and functional blade.
