Yoru no Inazuma (夜の稲妻): lightning in the night
Inazuma (lightning) literally translates as “the wife of rice” in Japanese: it was once believed that thunderbolts fertilised the rice paddies and heralded a plentiful harvest. In the night (yoru), lightning becomes all the more striking, a sudden burst of light tearing through the dark.
This katana conjures that image across its saya: golden lightning bolts cut through a glittering midnight-blue and silver lacquer, evoking a storm beneath a star-filled sky. The swirling patterns of the damascus blade call to mind clouds churned by a tempest.
A damascus steel blade with swirling patterns
The blade is crafted in damascus steel, formed by layering and folding multiple sheets of steel. This process brings to the surface swirling patterns unique to each blade, suggestive of clouds in motion.
There is no hamon or bo-hi: the surface is given over entirely to the damascus grain, visible along the full length of the blade.
A white mounting with golden bamboo
The octagonal tsuba is crafted in white alloy with a braided effect, decorated with a bamboo motif and a golden border. The fuchi and kashira share the same braided white alloy, lending the mounting a refined, cohesive character.
The tsuka combines wood with a faux white ray skin, wrapped in a diamond-pattern green tsuka-ito, beneath which silver dragon menuki appear. The habaki in gilded brass is engraved and brushed.
A midnight-blue saya streaked with golden lightning
The saya is crafted in hardwood, coated in a glittering midnight-blue and silver lacquer cut through with golden lightning bolts. The glitter shimmers like stars glimpsed behind a storm. A green sageo, matched to the tsuka wrapping, completes this striking composition.
Dimensions and handling
With a blade of 71 cm and an overall length of 103 cm, Yoru no Inazuma carries the proportions of a traditional katana. The 26.5 cm tsuka allows a secure two-handed grip. At 1.3 kg, balance is well maintained. Sheathed, it measures 105 cm, ideal for display, where its storm-inspired decoration can be fully appreciated.
