Hōō (鳳凰): the phoenix
The hōō is the phoenix of East Asia, a mythical bird said to appear only in times of peace and prosperity. In Japan, it is an imperial symbol, associated with virtue, loyalty and rebirth. It crowns the roof of the celebrated Phoenix Hall at Byōdō-in temple.
This wakizashi places it at the heart of its tsuba, where it spreads its long plumes among the clouds, touched with gold. The gilded borders of the fuchi and kashira carry that same elegance throughout the mounting.
A 1045 steel blade with bo-hi
The blade is forged from 1045 steel, a reliable and widely used carbon steel that is straightforward to maintain. It follows a shinogi-zukuri geometry with a chū-kissaki tip, and features a single bo-hi that terminates in a rounded finish (maru-dome) before the yokote.
Its satin polish lends the steel a soft, restrained lustre. No hamon is present.
A mounting in the spirit of the golden phoenix
The round (maru-gata) tsuba in black-patinated alloy features a textured ground (ishime) and a phoenix with long trailing feathers among clouds in relief (takabori), with gilded highlights and a rounded rim (maru-mimi). A gilded brass seppa accompanies it.
The fuchi in patinated alloy is chiselled with foliate motifs, and the kashira with scrollwork, both edged with a golden border. The handle combines wood with a black faux ray-skin, wrapped in brown tsuka-ito in hineri-maki, with gilded menuki. The ichimai habaki in gilded copper carries a hammered scale texture.
A high-gloss black saya
The saya is crafted from solid wood, finished in a high-gloss black roiro-nuri lacquer. The koiguchi and kojiri, both rounded (maru), are lacquered black in keeping with the scabbard. The black-lacquered kurikata with a gilded shitodome holds a brown cotton sageo.
Dimensions and handling of the wakizashi
With a blade of 51 cm and an overall length of 78 cm, Hōō carries the proportions of a wakizashi, the short companion to the katana. Its 23 cm handle offers a comfortable single-handed grip, with room for the second hand in support. At 1 kg, it remains easy to handle. It measures 80 cm in its saya, a format well suited to display alone or alongside a katana.
