Musha no Kao (武者の顔): the face of the warrior
Musha is the warrior, and kao his face. The name speaks directly to the most singular element of this tanto: its tsuba, shaped as a samurai head, a portrait chiselled into metal.
At the opposite end of the handle, the kashira carries a dragon head. Warrior and legendary creature face each other across the length of the tsuka, a meeting of man and myth that lends this tanto an unusually narrative character.
A T10 steel blade with a genuine gunome midare hamon
The blade is forged in T10 steel, a high-carbon steel known for its hardness and edge retention. It has been clay-tempered, producing a genuine gunome midare hamon: an irregular, wave-form temper line that runs the full length of the blade.
It is further distinguished by its three tones of steel (bright steel, natural steel and black steel) creating bold contrasts across its entire surface. The geometry follows shinogi-zukuri proportions with a chū-kissaki tip, and the absence of a bo-hi allows these tonal nuances to express themselves without interruption. Hand-sharpened to a true cutting edge, the blade carries the quiet authority of genuine craft.
A copper mounting between warrior and dragon
The rounded copper tsuba is cast in the form of a samurai head, plated in gold and silver. The copper kashira takes the shape of a dragon head, equally plated in gold and silver, while the copper fuchi is engraved with silver Japanese symbols.
The tsuka is wrapped in genuine white ray skin over a hardwood core, beneath a diamond-pattern black tsuka-ito that reveals silver menuki beneath. The habaki is brushed brass.
A marbled saya in black, white and gold
The saya is crafted in hardwood, finished with a brushed marbled lacquer blending black, white and gold. This turbulent surface recalls veined stone or a storm-lit sky, in perfect harmony with the martial character of the mounting. A discreet black sageo completes the piece.
Dimensions and handling
With a 33 cm blade and an overall length of 55 cm, Musha no Kao is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm tsuka sits firmly in a single hand. At 0.8 kg, it offers a reassuring, balanced presence. Sheathed, it measures 57 cm, a format that brings full sculptural focus to its carved guard when displayed.
