Sora no Hana (空の花): flowers in the sky
Sora is the sky; hana, the flower. Together they conjure the image of petals drifting through open air, carried on a spring breeze, or settling softly like winter snowflakes.
This tanto takes that vision as its theme: a pale-blue saya strewn with hundreds of tiny white blossoms. The silver-toned fittings (dragon tsuba, wave-carved fuchi and kashira) and the blue blade with its white wave decoration unite sky and sea in a single composition.
A blue-and-steel blade with white wave ornamentation
The blade is forged from manganese steel, a robust alloy prized for its resilience. It combines two finishes (blue and steel) and carries white wave motifs along its length, evoking sea foam breaking across open water.
This undulating midare-style line lends the blade the appearance of a hamon. There is no bo-hi, leaving the full surface free for this blue-and-white decoration to unfold uninterrupted.
Silver-toned fittings with dragon and wave motifs
The round tsuba in silver-toned alloy is pierced and features a dragon in relief. The fuchi and kashira, also in silver-toned alloy, are carved with wave motifs, while the habaki in dark copper is engraved and sculpted into wave forms.
The tsuka pairs wood with faux white ray skin, wrapped in a diamond-pattern black tsuka-ito braid, beneath which silver-toned menuki emerge, each evoking a wave or a flash of lightning.
A pale-blue saya of a thousand blossoms
The saya is crafted from hardwood and finished in a pale-blue lacquer scattered with hundreds of tiny white flowers. This delicate ornamentation lends the tanto a rare gentleness. A black koiguchi and black sageo provide the contrast this light palette requires.
Dimensions and handling
With a blade of 33 cm and an overall length of 55 cm, Sora no Hana is a tanto of generous proportions. Its 17 cm tsuka sits firmly in a single hand, and at just 0.7 kg the piece remains pleasingly light. Sheathed, it measures 57 cm, a format that shows the flower-strewn saya to its full advantage on a display stand.
