Byakuya katana sword: design and finishes
The Byakuya katana sword (白夜) evokes the “white night,” that mystical period when light and darkness blend together. This name symbolizes the duality between day and night, purity and mystery, concepts deeply rooted in samurai philosophy. The striking contrast between the immaculate white of the scabbard and the black accents that adorn it reflects these opposites coming together.
Its natural-colored T10 steel blade features a polished finish that subtly captures the light, while the bo-hi carved into its surface lightens the overall effect and produces a characteristic whistling sound when moved. The black alloy guard (tsuba) has a hollow cross floral shape. The handle (tsuka) combines the rough texture of red imitation stingray skin with black diamond-patterned braiding (tsuka-ito), creating a firm grip. The menuki represent a black dragon. The white lacquered wooden scabbard (saya) dotted with black spots evokes a starry night sky, complemented by a black sageo.
